abstract

We are working on project about visualization of human cognition using brain data. Functional magnetic resonance imaging or functional (fMRI) is a functional neuroimaging procedure using MRI technology that measures brain activity by detecting associated changes in blood flow. We’re dealing with adding some filters to make data more meaningful and animation of the data in 3D domain. Our main challenge is that working with data set of +40k Voxels and +400k edges. Moreover, our motivation is that there exist no tool which can be visualized such a big data.

Foreword

Defined as "Visualization of the human cognition using brain data", CEREBRA is a Project that involves visualization of the fmri data in space-time.

CEREBRA first started with SimpleLAbs group as a senior project. It ranked 2nd among other senior projects. As KernelPanic we plan to implement new features such as Animation capability and numerous filters to increase comprehensibility of the result further. To attain such a goal, we will employ Computer Science and Graphics optimization techniques for visualizing a data set of +40k Voxels and +400k edges.

Significance of the Project

The human brain is a complex system which is topologically represented as structural and functional connectomes. Mapping the human brain connectome and uncovering its underlying organizational principles are fundamentally important in neuroanatomy, neurodevelopment, cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology.

Recent studies have suggested that the human brain connectome can be mapped using neuroimaging data and further characterized through sophisticated analytic strategies based on graph theory. Our goal is to display some of the brain functions by visualizing large fmri datasets by applying computer science optimization techniques

Technologies used

CEREBRA is planned to be a standalone application. Technologies mentioned below have been choosen to make the final application userfriendly and usable without any overhead(i.e. third-party platform installation).
