Frequently Asked Question

What is "CAPTCHA"?

CAPTCHA is an abreviation for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". CAPTCHA's are a type of challenge-response test used in computing to ensure that the response is not generated by a computer. The process usually involves one computer (a server) asking a user to complete a simple test which the computer is able to generate and grade. Because other computers are unable to solve the CAPTCHA, any user entering a correct solution is presumed to be human.

How i-Digit digitizes documents?

We start with the scanned images (like .tif files) of old book or journals. Our system cuts the images into smaller pieces for each word in the page. Than this small images are sent as CAPTCHA's to thousands of web users every second. As people solve the CAPTCHA's we gather the answers and generate the digitized form of the document word by word.

What is "Bot"?

Bot is a term derived from "robot". A bot is a program simulates a human activity. Typically, bots perform repetitive tasks, at a much higher rate than would be possible for a human.

Protecting the web sites from the bots is a great need because there are so many malicious bots of the following types:

  1. Spambots that harvest email addresses from internet forums, contact forms or guestbook pages
  2. Downloader programs that suck bandwidth by downloading entire web sites
  3. Web site scrapers that grab the content of web sites and re-use it without permission on automatically generated doorway pages
  4. Viruses and worms
  5. DDoS attacks
  6. Botnets / zombie computers; etc.
  7. File-name modifiers on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks. These change the names of files (often containing malware) to match user search queries.
  8. Automating the entry of internet sweepstakes or instant win games to get an advantage
  9. Automating tasks on promotional web sites to win prizes

The best and easiest way of bot and spam protection is using a CAPTCHA which is a free service of i-Digit.

How i-Digit protects from bot and spam?

All i-Digit CAPTCHA's contain images two words. Corresponding text form of one of the words is already known by our system (i.e. it is already digitized) and the other one is unknown. The user is supposed to enter two words, one of which matches with the already digitized word. (The order of the known and unknown word is random)

If you are a web site owner looking for spam and bot protection, all you need to do is to register your domain to our system and embed our CAPTCHA wherever you need in your web page.

By using our CAPTCHA, a web site owner gets rid of the expensive CAPTCHA generation process and help to digitize books.
